My CRQ: How can proper disposal and management of solid waste has any impact on environmental degradation and health related issues in Karachi?
INTRODUCTION:
There are so many issues creeping in our society but solid waste management is one of the most compelling issues which need to be addressed right now.Karachi, one of the major metropolitan holds its importance as one of the most diversified city with people coming from so many cultures entangled together to form a mini universe. As monumental the city is as formidable are its issues. Inappropriate garbage disposal has led to a devastating scenario within the city while the authority’s devil-may-care attitude has been making the scenario worse.
Karachi[1] is the 7th largest metropolitan of the world with an estimated population of 16.21 million.
With such an immense population the garbage generated is also quite substantial. In over past few years many health related issues are recorded and besides being huge, happening, chic, trendy city it also has a quality of air which is on the nosedive and the presence[2] of heavy smoke in air of Karachi has resulted in serious diseases especially allergic, cardiac and respiratory. [3]Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) General Secretary Dr Qaiser Sajjad said that PMA has been vocal since long against the air pollution and all sorts of environmental issues as they are the major factors behind the increasing disease burden in the city.
Asthma is on the rise in the city due to several reasons and multiple factors, which is affecting the people with sensitive eyes or those vulnerable to any kind of allergies. [4]Over 800 asthma patients are registered with the JPMC; these patients are visiting the facility more frequently these days with complaints of nasal/eye discharge, coughing and wheezing. [5]Karachi have been rated among the top 5 world’s most populated city according to July 2015 findings of World Economic Forum. Once there used to be a time when a person would have tossed the coin in the sea near Netti Jetty while the people observe the diver diving down to get that coin but maybe the old times are gone and now we are left with a sea shore full of waste products.
AUDIENCE AND STAKEHOLDERS:
The city of Lights lost its charm the day when its own inhabitants disowned it. Due to poor solid waste management, gradual increase in pollution has been observed. While the only answer to these all issues is, “It has to start from your own home.” Each and every citizen can play their vital role for a change. [6]Use of polythene bags should be prohibited but the way all these treatment plans have been rejected by previous administrations is clearly due to lack of political influence and ownership for Karachi.
It’s high time that this issue should be address on a higher level so a prompt action could be taken because a justice denied anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere as its sheer injustice to inhabitants of Karachi and if serious measures are taken it can result in less pollution, while health of people can be made much better and tourism would once again return back.
Like any other mega city depression is found in blood of its inhabitants which is due to pollution of every kind. [7]According to the data published by Pakistan Air Quality Initiative (PAQI), (Fine Particulate Matter) Karachi with values 32, 71, and 71, in October, November, and December, respectively, has also been regarded as “unhealthy”.
To develop a certain policy or to identify the lacking of preexistence one, one must observe things at the ground level and what is being done on the papers. Interaction with relevant stakeholders is must as to have versions of all responsible, whether the officers or common man. The primary source for the research would be the general public as they being the major stakeholders. while the secondary source would be different institutes and NGOs which have been working since long for this cause, In this way their approach towards this affair would be quite comprehensible by us and what they have done up till now for solid waste management and proper disposal of garbage, which is the core of our concern as by evaluating the current methods for ways of disposing, new and better strategies can be devise which can answer the needs of 16 million people.
METHODOLOGY:
1) By interviewing different focal persons over environmental degradation we can sketch a clear picture of where we are standing right now.
2) If the waste products are properly disposed of or been recycle then it can surely change the dynamics of the city which can be done by first understanding its inhabitants so by distributing questionnaires if the general public is satisfied with disposal arrangements or not because this heaps of waste materials are the primary source of health hazards and the take of general public over this issue would be the most crucial part. 3) To change all this, a strong environmental protection agency shout be set up, one that is headed by environmentalists.
4) By going through different surveys conducted by WHO or others a proper sense of issue would be designed.
5) Seminars would be conducted so to enlighten the general public about the devastating condition they are in.
6) NGOs would be provided with an outline to conduct workshops
7) "Go Green" project could be the turning point in which the local bodies should be forced to act on and to plant trees within every nook or corner of the city.
8) A local body should be developed by Government, which should hire solid waste inspectors and a proper department should be developed. It can help solve employment problems and at the same time these inspectors will monitor the public activities. Therefore, in this regard I'll approach DG, SSWMB (Sindh solid waste management board) to know his views.
CONCLUSION:
Disposal of waste is a collective responsibility of government to an individual. Lack of governance is the major aspect which contributed to this scenario. If the solid waste is properly disposed of it can also help to generate the electricity which can help overcome the short fall of electricity in Karachi. There is a need of public mobilization and sensitization from the very gross route level.

A healthy outside starts from inside
Statistics indicate that on a daily basis, about 12,000 tons of solid waste is generated in Karachi alone, of which forty percent can be found on the city streets. Improper management of solid waste is causing the spread of infectious diseases and environmental pollution. This study examines how the solid waste management process is implemented in Karachi and the challenges faced by the responsible authorities.
